Hurricane Season Safety Reminders
Baron Team InsightsA 60-second read by the Baron Team: Now that we are in an active hurricane season, a good reminder is that we do see an increase in scams related to natural disasters. Be on the lookout for disaster-relief, insurance, or charity-relief scams.
Here are some helpful tips/reminders from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to keep in mind:
- Know that officials with government disaster assistance agencies do not call or text asking for financial account information.
- There is no fee required to apply for or get federal assistance from FEMA.
- Remember that phone scams often use spoofing techniques to deliberately falsify the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity and make the call appear legitimate.
- If someone calls claiming to be a government official or insurance professional, hang up and call the number listed on the agency’s official website.
- Do not open suspicious emails.
- Verify information in social media posts.
